At the end of basic sport techniques learning process, many young people abandon the sport practice due to lack of skills, capabilities and proper age in order to be involved in competitive championships. The sports abandonment is the effect of day-by-day demotivation and loosing of interests and passion in the field of a specific sport, since these young people are excluded from the top-level competition. The sports performance level required boosts indeed the problem of sports abandon by young people.

In the competition frame some key elements such as the failure to achieve the awards and the sport goals, the physical and mental pressure of training, the need to balance private life, school time and the sports performances, raise the abandon of the unsatisfied young athletes.

Since 2009 CGFS (Lead partner) is developing a teaching sportive model preventing the sports dropout of young people about the swimming activities.

The experimentation in the swimming field has led CGFS to achieve excellent results, even well beyond expectations. In many cases, in addition to preventing the dropout phenomenon, the activities that have been put in place have led young people to achieve superior sports results than those achieved in the “traditional” competitive context. In general, the perception of operators is that of a general improvement of the approach to the real values of sport not only by young people, but also by coaches and the family context.

Following this local experience, CGFS began a work of comparison with its network of relationships, both to verify the existence of similar experiences in other sports or in other countries, and to evaluate the existence of scientific approaches to the topic. An important contribution was made by UEFA staff, who thanks to their knowledge allowed CGFS to draw on an important amount of information from the European football scene. This showed a strong interest in the subject, but also a clear need to deepen objectives and methodologies through a comparative analysis of similar experiences.

This led to the cooperative design of the project Preventing Youth Sport Dropouts (PYSD), which has the clear general intent of promote education in and through sport with special focus on skills development.

The project is divided into 3 steps:

  1. Recognition of good practices
  2. Scientific analysis and focus on phenomenon of resilience
  3. Testing and monitoring phase
